Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll held Saturday September 24. Speaking of his campaign for the presidency in 2012, he said the win is, “A sign of our growing momentum.”
Rising from Fifth in Iowa August Poll to First in Florida September Poll
After what could have been considered a disappointing fifth place in the Ames, Iowa straw poll on August 13. After the August poll, Cain was hopeful and pleased. He told CNN that he was encouraged by his placing in the middle of the pack with only a 46% name recognition according to Gallup polls. At the time, Cain expected that as his name recognition increased and more people became aware of his message, his support would grow.
The Gallup poll for the week of September 5-18, 2011, showed Herman Cain with a 50% name recognition. Though his name recognition increased a mere 4%, he rose from fifth place last month in the Iowa poll, to first place in the Republican candidate field in the September 24 Florida straw poll. Cain rose to first, above second place Rick Perry at a trailing 15% of the voters, and Mitt Romney in third with 14%.
The September Gallup poll shows the Positive Intensity ratings for the three candidates with Herman Cain maintaining his rating at 24%, Rick Perry at 24%, and Mitt Romney at only 15%. According to the Gallup organization, “The Positive Intensity rating is calculated using unrounded strongly favorable and strongly unfavorable values.”
Herman Cain’s Optimism Rewarded in Florida Poll
Does this rise in voter popularity justify Herman Cain’s optimism in the success of the grassroots movement behind his campaign? Mr. Cain believes it does. According to Cain, he is a serious contender to win his bid for the White House “Because of the people.” He told Fox News during an interview on September 25, “The citizen movement is more powerful than the establishment wants to give it credit for.”
Cain’s burgeoning popularity among the American people might be attributed, at least in part, to his straightforward approach to the issues. During recent debates, other candidates have bantered, and faltered, telling viewers what they already know, America has problems. Mr. Cain has adopted a focused approach, offering new solutions to the problems. Cain describes himself as, “A serious contender for the U.S. Presidency because of the people...my message is what’s resonating with the people.”
Cain Presents a Consistent Solution Oriented Message
His message is consistently directed at solutions, what America needs to do about serious problems, rather than just talking about the problems.
In the Washington Times, September 15, 2011, in her article, An Economic Recovery Solution, reporter Emily Miller highlighted the difference between the current president and Herman Cain when she said, “Unlike President Obama, Mr. Cain has held a real job, and it shows in his reform agenda.”
Cain’s reform agenda for economic rescue and recovery is opposite the current administration’s solution of spending increasingly more money at a time when America’s financial rating has been downgraded due to fiscal irresponsibility and financial overspending. Mr. Cain advocates, “Serious but responsible belt-tightening can save businesses, and it can also save our country with the right leadership.”
America’s Finances are Broken Cain wants them Repaired
In his bid to become the next U.S. President, Cain offers himself as the right leadership. In addition to his bid for the presidency, he continues to offer what he says are viable solutions to some of America’s most pressing problems to the current administration, and to his fellow contenders for the presidential nomination. His open offer of his proposed 9-9-9 solution to the financial crisis resonates that Herman Cain is interested in more than becoming president; he is interested in fixing the problems currently plaguing America.
Cain has emphasized during his campaign that to solve a problem, first you have to understand what the problem is, and then deal with the real problem. His common sense approach may resonate with many people who understand that the solution to spending too much money, and being too far in debt, isn’t to spend more money.
Herman Cain Confident Votes Will Come as His Name Recognition Increases
During his interview with Fox News on September 25, Cain said, “My message is what’s resonating with the people.” Cain’s win of the Florida poll may be an indication that the resonance with his message can be converted into votes. With only a 50% name recognition in September the question is, will Herman Cain’s support increase as more Americans recognize his name? Cain believes it will and commented, “As my name identification goes up, people are going to take a closer look at my message.”
Cain: The Amercan People are Sending a Message to Washington D.C.
Cain went on to tell Fox News, "The voters, the people out in the field are saying we want to send a message to Washington, D.C. The establishment is not going to make this call, the people are going to make the call and that's what you saw in the Florida straw poll yesterday."
